Russia’s naval ‘Smolny’ makes second stop in Equatorial Guinea
(MENAFN) The Russian naval training ship Smolny has made its second official stop in Equatorial Guinea, marking the beginning of its latest international voyage, according to reports.
Part of the Baltic Fleet, the vessel was welcomed in Malabo by top-ranking officers from the Equatorial Guinean Navy, along with the Russian ambassador and diplomatic staff. Unlike previous missions, this year’s journey begins in Equatorial Guinea and will extend to several African nations—including South Africa, Tanzania, Sao Tome and Principe, and the Republic of the Congo—before heading to Vietnam and concluding in Vladivostok, Russia, by late September.
Onboard the Smolny are approximately 400 personnel, including 200 naval cadets participating in hands-on maritime training. During their stay in Malabo, the cadets are scheduled to engage in both military and cultural events, such as a parade, a friendly football match, and gatherings with members of the local Russian community.
As part of the official program, senior naval officials from Equatorial Guinea were given a guided tour of the vessel by its commander. The tour included key operational areas like the ship’s command bridge and medical facilities, as well as the crew’s living quarters—currently home to 15 Tanzanian cadets enrolled in Russian naval academies.
This visit builds on the Smolny's 2024 port tour across Africa, which previously included stops in countries such as Cameroon, Benin, the Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Namibia, and Angola.
