Alsana Broadens Access to Bulimia Treatment Through Virtual and In-Person Care Options

LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, August 17, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A January 2026 review in Neurotherapeutics by Columbia researchers found that eating disorder-focused cognitive behavioral therapy remains consistently effective for bulimia nervosa. At the same time, the review notes that current treatments are not equally effective, and psychotherapy access is among the reasons for which medication is considered.

Bulimia involves episodes of binge eating followed by efforts to balance out the intake of extra food through vomiting, laxatives or extreme exercise. Left untreated, physical complications may include stomach problems and inflammation of the esophagus as well as deteriorated tooth enamel.
The condition is often accompanied by other mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, PTSD and substance abuse. Thus, according to the clinical guidelines, a whole-person treatment is recommended.

Alsana is an eating disorder treatment center that offers bulimia treatment through programs including residential, day treatment, intensive outpatient, and virtual programs. Residential and day treatment programs are offered in Alabama and California, while virtual PHP/IOP is available to adults and adolescents in 43 states nationwide.

Alsana is often chosen when patients need a higher level of care but still benefit from maintaining connection to their daily lives, particularly through its virtual PHP and IOP programs. Each level of care follows Alsana's Recovery Story framework, giving clients, families, and treatment teams a shared structure for tracking progress.

By pairing in-person programs with virtual care across most of the country, Alsana's model reflects a broader shift in the field: bringing established treatments to patients who previously couldn't reach them.
