Train as we deploy: ACC/SG summit forges next-gen medical readiness advisors

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. — As the strategic landscape shifts in the medical field, Air Combat Command’s Office of the Surgeon General trains medical readiness officers on current and upcoming deployment tools. They hosted the 2026 ACC/SGX Readiness Training Summit for medical leadership and key decision makers to align, organize and equip medical forces for rapid deployment across the command, Aug. 11-12, 2026.
“Readiness is ever-changing and the intent of this summit is to accelerate the learning curve by transforming new medical readiness officers into high-functioning readiness advisors,” said Capt. Ivy Scmidt, ACC/SG home station medical response branch chief. “They can confidently tell their group commander exactly how many medical assets are fully trained, equipped, and ready to deploy in support of the mission.”
During the event, briefers discussed multiple readiness tools and programs such as the [Air Expeditionary Wing 2.0 model](https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/4387429/usaf-to-introduce-air-expeditionary-wing-20/), Medical Readiness Decision Support System, and Combat Enhancement Teams. This presented leaders and decision makers the opportunity to discuss how these programs will impact their forces at the tactical level and prepare ACC warfighters for combatant commanders.
“The most critical element here is continuity,” said Lee McGuire, ACC/SG ground medical manpower and equipment force packaging branch chief. “Our goal must always be to train exactly as we deploy. You want to look your teammates in the face, know who is standing beside you, understand how each person will react, and ensure everyone is pulling in the same direction.”
Under these models and frameworks, medical teams will arrive in theater as a tightly trained unit of action ready to establish mobile casualty care under austere conditions.
“As the Air Force continues to evolve its force presentation models, our medical force capabilities are built to endure and adapt no matter the situation,” said Col. Raymond Clydesdale, ACC/SG commander.
The summit concluded with a review of upcoming rehearsals and how the medical teams will need to be certified for success. These upcoming exercises will allow leadership to test and train on the tools and systems needed to make their teams deployment ready.
From training to real world, medical leadership at ACC are adapting deployment readiness for the ever-evolving warfront. Together, they are forging a cohesive, battle-ready force prepared to save lives in any contested environment.
